The benefits of PIS: How it can improve your financial life

Beneficiaries eligible to receive PIS

Beneficiaries eligible to receive the PIS (Social Integration Program) in Brazil are workers who meet certain criteria related to working time and remuneration.

Below, I detail the main criteria that define who can receive the PIS:

  1. PIS/PASEP Registration:
    • To be eligible for PIS, the worker must be registered in the program. Registration is usually done by companies when the worker is formally hired. The PIS registration number is a fundamental requirement for accessing the benefits.
  2. Working Time:
    • The worker must have carried out paid activity with a registered employment record for at least 30 days in the base year. The base year is the reference period for calculating the benefit, and is normally the calendar year prior to the PIS payment.
  3. Remuneration:
    • In addition to the minimum working time, the worker must have received an average monthly salary of up to two minimum wages in the base year. This amount is adjusted annually and may vary according to the current minimum wage.
  4. Link with Companies:
    • The worker must have maintained a formal employment relationship with companies that contributed to the Workers' Support Fund (FAT). These companies are responsible for passing on PIS contributions to the government.
  5. Income Tax Declaration:
    • In some cases, it is necessary to have submitted the Personal Income Tax (IRPF) declaration for the PIS to be released. This may be an additional requirement for some workers.
  6. Cadastral Update:
    • Keeping your registration data updated at Caixa Econômica Federal (in the case of PIS) or Banco do Brasil (in the case of PASEP) is important to ensure receipt of the benefit, as any payments are made by means of credit to an account or withdrawal at bank branches.

It is important to note that the criteria may vary over time due to changes in legislation.

Therefore, it is always recommended to check the updated rules with the responsible bodies, such as Caixa Econômica Federal or Banco do Brasil.

How to Calculate the PIS Value Step by Step

Step 1: Find out the base year, which is the year before the PIS payment. For example, if you want to calculate in 2023, the base year will be 2022.

Step 2: Count how many months you worked formally in the base year, making sure you worked at least 30 full days.

Step 3: Consult the PIS value table for the base year. This table shows how much you can receive based on the months worked.

Step 4: Calculate the proportional value of PIS by multiplying the annual value of PIS by the fraction corresponding to the months worked. Use this simple formula:

Proportional PIS Value = (Annual PIS Value) x (Months Worked / 12)

Practical Example: Suppose you worked formally for 6 months in 2022 and the annual PIS amount is R$ 1,000.00.

Proportional PIS Value = (R$ 1,000.00) x (6 / 12)

Proportional PIS Value = (R$ 1,000.00) x (0.5)

Proportional PIS Value = R$ 500.00

In this example, if you worked 6 months in 2022, you would be entitled to receive R$ 500.00 in PIS.

Remember that there may be specific rules, and because of these rules, some factors may change.

So it is always a good idea to check with Caixa Econômica Federal (for PIS) or Banco do Brasil (for PASEP) to obtain updated information specific to your case.
